March 21 of each year is World Sleep Day, which was established primarily to raise awareness of the importance of sleep and the quality of sleep. In fact, “sleep snoring” is a multidisciplinary disease that hides a great danger.

The Difference between Snoring And Sleep Apnea

Snoring is one of the symptoms of sleep apnea, especially severe snoring. But not all people who snoring will have sleep apnea. Snoring is the sound of airflow during sleep because part of the airway is blocked and the surrounding tissue vibrates. Sleep apnea is also due to obstruction of the airway. But the biggest difference between the two is that sleep apnea refers to a pause in breathing while sleeping. Not all people who snoring will definitely have sleep apnea.

Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

♦ Loud snoring, which is usually more prominent in obstructive sleep apnea

♦ Episodes of breathing cessation during sleep witnessed by another person

♦ Abrupt awakenings accompanied by shortness of breath, which more likely indicates central sleep apnea

♦ Going to the bathroom frequently during the night

♦ Awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat

Sleep apnea can leave you feeling exhausted during the day, affect your mood and your relationship with your bed partner, and be dangerous to your health.

Complications of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is considered a serious medical condition. Complications may include:

Daytime fatigue. You may have difficulty concentrating and find yourself falling asleep at work, while watching TV or even when driving. People with sleep apnea have an increased risk of motor vehicle and workplace accidents.

High blood pressure or heart problems. Obstructive sleep apnea may increase the risk of recurrent heart attack, and abnormal heartbeats, such as atrial fibrillation.

Type 2 diabetes. People with sleep apnea are more likely to develop insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes compared with people without the sleep disorder.

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. You may have sleep apnea if you snore loudly, and you feel tired even after a full night's sleep.

Polysomnography (sleep study)

Polysomnography is the main way to detect sleep apnea or other sleep-related breathing disorders. This test records:

√  Brain waves

√  The amount of oxygen in your blood

√  Air movement through your nose while you breathe

√  Your heart rate and breathing

√   Eyes and legs movements
