Chinese Calligraphy Workshop: Carry Forward Traditional Culture

Chinese characters are written with black ink and Chinese brush. They are formed of strokes which make the characters beautiful and vivid. This is Chinese calligraphy, the base and miniature of Chinese culture.

Chinese calligraphy is extensive and profound with over five thousand years of history. It is not just a tool for communication, but a way of expressing people's inner world aesthetically.

Chinese Calligraphy

On November 9, the activity about carrying forward traditional Chinese calligraphy was jointly held by Mandarin House and Shanghai Renai Hospital.

Quite a few calligraphy amateurs took part in this activity. At the beginning, Mr. Zhu explained the origin, characteristics, basic skills and elements of Chinese calligraphy, such as sitting posture, writing posture, writing method and so on. The participants grasped the essence of Chinese calligraphy through this activity.  

Then, the teacher gave a demonstration first. She wrote down some Chinese characters for the participants to to imitate and guide them on the spot. The students were absorbed and studied seriously. The teachers were patient. Sometimes they held the students' hands to guide their writing. 

The activity lasts over one hour. All participants roamed in the ocean of calligraphy, and finally finished their works that were neat and meaningful and have their own characteristics. At the same time, in the process of teaching and learning, all participants enhanced communication with each other.

At the scene, the head of Shanghai Renai Hospital International Medical Center said that more and more overseas people came to China. Traditional Chinese cultures, such as calligraphy and traditional Chinese medicine, has aroused many foreigners' strong interest and benefited them a lot. Through the activity, the foreigners feel the charm of Chinese calligraphy art and their enthusiasm for learning Chinese is stimulated. The activity, as a part of cultural construction, enhanced sino-foreign cultural exchanges.
