Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
What is Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
Prominent ears is a very common problem, affecting as many as 2 in 100 people. This sort of aesthetic problem can have a real effect on self-esteem, particularly in social situations. Ear correction surgery or otoplasty is a simple operation which can be performed on most adults. The surgery is used to correct prominent ears as well as enlarged or deformed ear lobes.
Otoplasty surgery takes place under general anaesthetic and takes between one and three hours. You should be able to go home the same day. Ear surgery will not leave you with any visible scarring as the incision is made behind the ear. The surgeon manipulates and reshapes the cartilage to create a natural and pleasing look.
As with any surgery, there will be a little redness and soreness but this should fade after around 48 hours. Immediately after the surgery the ears will be completely covered and this dressing should remain in place for 3 - 4 days. In order to ensure that the ear is protected and heals as intended, you will need to wear a special elasticated headband when you sleep for around a month.
